mirror.co.uk: U2 are poised to make a sensational return to Croke Park next summer - if Bono gets his way.

The Irish superstars want to rock the revamped Dublin venue 18 years after they last visited during the Joshua Tree Tour. [arrow more]

scotsman.com: WHEN Bono takes to the stage next Wednesday afternoon peering through his trademark wraparound shades, the audience will be composed, not of screaming fans, but the sober-suited ranks of the Labour Party conference.

Brighton is the latest stop in an unconventional tour - both Republican and Democratic party conventions have already been addressed - by a man described in the US political press as "the world’s second most important politician".

Enjoying the spotlight of guest speaker, an appellation previously given to political heavyweights such as Bill Clinton and Nelson Mandela, the lead singer of U2 (real name Paul Hewson), will challenge the government to help eradicate Third World debt. [arrow more]

pitchforkmedia.com: One, two, three, fourteen -- and they're off! U2 have returned from the calculated "comeback" of 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind with "Vertigo," a surprisingly uncalculated single that may not constitute a return to form, exactly, but recaptures much of the boundless energy that has characterized their best work -- minus Bono's heavy affectation and the band's traditionally stadium-oriented sound.

The song sounds delightfully tossed off, from its silly Spanish count-off to the effervescent post-punk of its verses, replete with affably shallow lyrical imagery ("Those bullets rip the sky of ink with gold/ They twinkle as the boys play rock and roll"). [arrow more]

bonovshelena_bbmtv.com: BlackBook magazine has paired up U2's Bono and his friend Helena Christensen for its annual "Face-to-Face" issue. "Bono vs. Helena Christensen" features original photographs taken by both the supermodel and the singer, who has painted lyrics from U2's upcoming album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, due November 22, across the images. Hello, Hello
Ola!
I'm at a place called vertigo (That's right!)

themercury.news.com.au: RADIO station Nova has been heavily promoting a world exclusive broadcast planned for this morning - the much-anticipated new single from U2, Vertigo.

It found an illegal copy of the song from the internet on Wednesday - ahead of its worldwide release to stations at 6pm today.

Nova negotiated with horrified U2 management to not play the song until 8.30am today.

But a tough letter from U2's lawyers saw a change of heart last night, and Nova will wait until tonight like everyone else.

"It's extraordinarily disappointing," program director Dan Bradley said. "The song's awesome, U2's the biggest band in the world, but unfortunately we'll have to wait an extra 10 or so hours, and I apologise to Nova listeners for that." [arrow more]

An diesem Tag veröffentlicht Warner Music nahezu das komplette Spektakel vollständig remastered auf einem 4-DVD-Set mit Multi-Channel Surround Sound. [arrow more]

canoe.ca: In a move that might make Irish rocker Bono a fan, Canada has wiped out the debt it was owed by three poor African nations. Finance Minister Ralph Goodale yesterday announced the $9-million debt relief to Senegal, Ghana and Ethiopia, adding the cancellation will help the countries spend more on health care and education.

Bono has been leading a campaign urging rich countries to help the Third World. During a spring visit to Ottawa, the U2 frontman praised Prime Minister Paul Martin for his commitment to help Africa through debt reduction and access to cheaper drugs.

edgebono1979observer.guardian.co.uk: For more than 25 years, U2 have pushed the boundaries of live performance in spectacular fashion. In an exclusive extract from the first authorised account of the band's touring history, Michael Bracewell explores the tensions between music, theatre and technology that produce such memorable and emotional shows.

1979, at the Dandelion Market beside Dublin's Gaiety Green flea market, an up-and-coming local band called U2 played an outdoor concert to a largely teenage audiencewho were unable to see them when they played at the neighbouring, licensed, McGonagle's club. And in this little scrap of history, perhaps, can be found the beginnings of U2's founding attitude towards live performance. [arrow more]

observer.guardian.co.uk: Bono, the lead singer of U2, is to appear as the star speaker at this year's Labour conference. The rock icon and global activist will be the latest in a string of celebrity guests to grace the annual event; others to have spoken include Nelson Mandela in 2000 and Bill Clinton in 2002 and, last year, the president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai. prweb.com: The first ever Los Angeles U2 Fan Convention to be held Sunday October 10, 2004 at the Ontario Convention Center - Ontario, California.
elevusa
Elevation USA, the band that seeks to “recreate the total U2 concert experience in both sight and sound” in their performances, will head to the Ontario Convention Center on Sunday, October 10th, to take part in the first ever Los Angeles U2 fan celebration.

Sponsored by Interference.com, “This is the first ever U2 fan celebration in Los Angeles,” said Amita Patel, OVCB’s director of sales and marketing. “I am thrilled that this celebration will take place right here at the Convention Center.” The scheduled events for the U2 fan celebration at the Ontario Convention Center include not only the live Elevation USA performance, but also all-day video shows, door prizes (including autographed copies of Carter Alan's book), trivia contests, freebie tables by Bags Unlimited and Goldmine magazine and live unplugged band karaoke with the L.A. U2 tribute band Joshua Tree. [arrow more]

msn.com: The Who once sang, “I hope I die before I get old,” and for most of us, the feeling is mutual. We’d rather our favorite groups give up the ghost than age ungracefully. U2 refuses to do either.

“[The album is] driven by a guitar player who is sick of the sight of me shaking hands with dodgy politicians,” Bono recently told a British paper. “The anger is unbelievable.” Believe it: His better-with-age vocals snap and crackle on the anthemic first single “Vertigo,” and the band sounds leaner—and louder—than ever. [arrow more]

usatoday.com: Without a note yet heard by the public, upcoming albums by U2, Eminem and Destiny's Child are expected to top the chart, reap fat holiday sales and drive traffic into stores.

"There isn't really any doubt about those three," says Alan Light, editor of music magazine Tracks. "At this point, I'm loath to say anyone is guaranteed a million-selling first week, given the way the world is, but Eminem is as much a lock for that as exists anywhere. And the others are big records that have been long anticipated and well set up. These are people who are not following fluke hits. They consistently deliver the goods." [arrow more]
