belfasttelegraph.co.uk: U2 legend Bono was bestowed with yet another award yesterday for his contribution to the music industry.

A commemorative medal was presented to him by the Ambassador of Chile, Alberto Yoacham, in memory of one of Chile's best known poets, Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda.

The rock'n'roll frontman is one of 100 personalities from across the globe to be awarded with a medal for their contribution to the arts, literature and music. [arrow more]

civilrightawardscotsman.com: Irish rocker Bono is to receive a US National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award.

The museum, built on the site in Memphis, Tennessee, where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated, gives two Freedom Awards every year to people who have worked to advance civil rights.

U2 frontman Bono, who is receiving the museum’s “international award” on October 18, had championed social justice with his music and activism, the museum said.

And here's a couple of polls just in. U2 have been voted 'best band of the past decade' in an online survey of 100,000 people for FHM Magazine in the UK. They pipped Red Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis and Coldplay for top spot, while 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' made it to fourth best album in the last ten years. [arrow more]

rte.ie: U2 have been voted the best band of the past decade in an online survey of 100,000 people.

In the survey, conducted by FHM, U2 topped the poll for best band, ahead of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis and Coldplay.

U2 also scored well on the album poll with 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' being voted the fourth best album in the last ten years. [arrow more]

"There's a generation of people who listen to what he has to say in the same way as the great spokespeople for previous generations, such as Bob Dylan and John Lydon," said Gareth Grundy, the deputy editor of Q magazine, which has compiled a list of the 100 most powerful people in music.

"These are the kind of people who can get what they want just by making a phone call. How much can they get just by picking up the phone? With someone like Bono - he can get through to the White House," Mr Grundy added.

Bono, who combines managing the U2 mega-brand with campaigning on global issues - he recently testified to the US Congress on why President George Bush should put more money into fighting Aids - is at number nine. [arrow more]

dotmusic: Bono, Morrissey and Sir Paul McCartney are amongst the nominations for the inaugural 'Mojo' awards.

The magazine, reflecting their more 'mature' readership, have announced details of their first rock'n'roll hall of fame.

The nominations are intended to honour acts and musicians apparently overlooked by other ceremonies and will be announced at the Banqueting House in London later this month. [arrow more]
